Relaxing after a long day at work with a glass of wine may have more benefits than it appears. While you may have the sole purpose of using it to unwind and de-stress, that is not the only benefit your body is getting.
One important benefit that studies have found is that drinking wine will reduce the risk of having a heart attack. The Harvard School of Public Health conducted this 16-year study and found that people who have high blood pressure are 30% less likely to have a heart attack compared to non-drinkers.
In addition to a lower risk of heart attack, there is also a lower risk of heart disease among those who drink red wine. The support for this comes from a compound in the wine called procyanidin. This compound is contained in red wine tannins and is more plentiful in wines specifically from southwest France and Sardina.
For those at risk for Type 2 diabetes, there is more good news! The Amsterdam VU University Medical Center published a study indicating that moderate drinkers have a 30% risk reduction for developing Type 2 diabetes versus non-drinkers.
Reduction for the risk of stroke is another benefit that drinking wine has to offer. Blood clot related strokes can be deadly but moderate wine drinking can reduce the possibility by about 50%. A Columbia University eight year study discovered this connection.
An Iceland study found that moderate wine drinking can reduce the risk of cataracts developing by 32% versus non-drinkers. The study also determined that wine drinkers are 43% less likely to develop cataracts compared to those who only drink beer.
Furthermore, drinking wine can also slow the decline of the brain. A Columbia University study determined that the brain of the average non-drinker declines faster than the brain of a moderate wine drinker.
Finally, a Stony Brook University four year study found that moderate consumption of wine, especially red, decreased the colon cancer risk in over 2,200 individuals by 45%.
Drinking wine can do so much for the human body that is not always seen on the surface. Next time you want to relax and unwind, think about these benefits and know that you are doing something to help your body. Just like anything else, make sure you drink wisely and in moderation.
