A Super 92 Point Malbec for Super Bowl

2013 Zorzal “Terrior Único” Malbec
Tupungato Valley, Argentina

If there was ever a time to grab an incredible value by the case … that time may be now. With the huge 92 Point rating issued by the Wine Advocate, this will be in high demand.

Zorzal is a young, boutique winery founded in 2007 by the Michelini brothers, Gerardo, Matias, and winemaker Juan Pablo. The winery and vineyards are located in a subregion of the Uco Valley called Gualtallary, outside the town of Tupungato at approximately 4500 feet above sea level, making it the highest winery in Mendoza.

The estate consists of 70 hectares with a unique blend of sand, stone, and limestone. The grapes are all hand harvested following the estate’s vision to have a light hand in the winemaking and to simply let the fruit and terroir shine. The winery practices organic methods in the vineyards and uses only indigenous yeast in the winemaking process.

Zorzal tends to pick grapes a little earlier in than most in Mendoza estates to retain freshness and acidity in their wines and to avoid the overblown ripeness that is too often seen from Mendoza.

“The 2013 Terroir Unico Malbec is unoaked and sourced from a special vineyard close to the winery, planted in poor soil. The code name they use internally to identify the wine is ‘chalk.’ It does have a strong sense of minerality and the pure character of the Malbec, with fresh floral notes, pungent aromatic herbs, and a spicy twist. The palate is very fluid, with outstanding texture. This is pure Malbec juice such that I had not experienced before.
Unbelievable quality for the price!”
