2012 Bovale, Bobal
A unique grape varietal from a unique region in Spain. The name Bovale comes from the Latin word for shape of the Bobal grape bunch, similar to a bull’s head. Bobal is known to have one of the highest color levels of any red wine grape.
Bovale is produced from vines 60 years old and older. They are planted to mainly flat vineyards, at high elevations with the vines growing in brown limestone and clay soils. Vines are trained to wires to allow optimal control of ripening.
90 Points, Stephen Tanzer International Wine Cellar: “Opaque ruby. Ripe dark berry scents are complicated by dried flowers and licorice. Takes a brighter turn to red fruits in the mouth, offering gently sweet raspberry and cassis and a hint of rose pastille. Finishes sappy and long, with subtle smokiness and even, polished tannins.”
